Community Interfaith Student Support Program

What is CISSP?

Community Inerfaith Student Support Program (CISSP) is a joint faith commuinty project to provide school supplies and certificates for shoes to hundreds of low-income children at the beginning of the school year in Livermore California. The Backpack project was initiated in recognition that expenses at the beginning of the school year could be prohibitive for low-income familes. This project is authorized by Tri-Valley Interfaith Council.

Teachers and Social workers of the Livermore Unified School District (LUSD) provide names of the students, (CISSP) then contacts the family to see if they would like the supplies. Only those making the initial contact with the family, a distribution coordinator and adult volunteers who deliver the packs to the family know the names of recipents.

Each congregation determines the number of backpacks (filled) they can provide. Typically members participate either by donating money towards the project or by buying backpacks and filling them with a list of supplies. With the outside funds (CISSP) can provide approximatley 700-800 filled backpacks a year to students. Volunteers deliver packs on the last Saturday morning in August. There are no overhead expenses and therfore 100% of all contrubutions goes toward these backpacks .
